What is Feeding the Children Summit NOLA?

Feeding the Children Summit NOLA is a bold response to the growing hunger crisis in New Orleans, directly addressing the urgent needs of food-insecure children and families left unsupported by the withdrawal of federal meal programs. Powered by local partnerships, this initiative emerges as a critical lifeline, and will serve as a community-driven solution to counteract detrimental state decisions.

How did we get here?

In a controversial move in February 2024, Louisiana’s leadership turned down a crucial $70 million offer from the federal government. Backed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the funding program – known as the Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer program aimed to provide essential food support to Louisiana families living at or below 185% of the federal poverty line during the summer months. State Legislature is currently working to counter this decision by providing the $3.5 million needed to participate in the program. Without adequate funding and support, children who rely on school meal programs for their nutritional needs stand to be greatly impacted this summer and beyond.

Why is this initiative important?

With Louisiana ranking second in the nation for child poverty and over 234,000 children battling food insecurity, the stakes couldn’t be higher. The ripple effects of hunger extend far beyond an empty stomach, undermining academic performance, health, mental wellness, and trapping children in a cycle of poverty. This initiative serves not just as a campaign, but as a movement to safeguard the future of our youth.
